This 180,000 acre
Kalmiopsis Wilderness is characterized by deep rough canyons, sharp rock ridges, and clear rushing
streams and rivers. The Kalmiopsis represents a unique landscape of unusual beauty composed of diverse
topography (elevations from 400 to 5,100 feet), rock, soil, vegetation and wildlife habitat.
The Kalmiopsis Wilderness is named for a unique shrub, the Kalmiopsis leachiana, a relic of the pre-ice
age and one of the oldest members of the Heath (Ericaceae) Family.
