old growth ponderosa and lodgepole pine stands, sagebrush steppe, wetlands, and other high desert ecosystems.
The sweeping views of Winter and Abert Rims are two of the most striking scenic features along the byway.
Bald eagles, American peregrine falcon, western snowy plovers, greater sand hill cranes, and trumpeter
swans can be seen in Summer Lake State Wildlife Area. Other sites include Fort Rock (a volcanic marr formation)
